The Best Time of Year for Roof Cleaning

February 20254 min read

While we can clean roofs year-round, some seasons offer better conditions than others. Here's what you need to know about timing your roof clean.

Spring (March - May) ✓ Excellent

Spring is one of the best times for roof cleaning. The weather is warming up, days are getting longer, and moss that's been growing over winter is at its peak — making it the perfect time to remove it before it causes more damage.

Benefits: Mild temperatures help biocide treatments work effectively. Removing winter growth prevents summer spread. Your roof looks great for the warmer months.

Summer (June - August) ✓ Good

Summer offers long days and generally dry conditions, which is great for roof cleaning. However, this is our busiest season, so booking in advance is recommended.

Benefits: Dry conditions mean faster drying times. Longer days allow us to complete larger jobs. Biocide treatments are very effective in warm weather.

Consideration: Very hot days can make roof work uncomfortable, so we may start earlier in the morning during heatwaves.

Autumn (September - November) ✓ Good

Autumn is another excellent time for roof cleaning. Cleaning before winter means your roof is protected during the harshest months when moss damage is most likely.

Benefits: Prepares your roof for winter. Removes debris from falling leaves. Biocide treatment has time to work before the cold sets in.

Winter (December - February) ○ Possible

We can still clean roofs in winter, but there are some limitations. We avoid working in freezing conditions, heavy rain, or when tiles are icy or slippery.

Benefits: Often shorter waiting times for bookings. Moss is dormant so won't spread further after cleaning.

Considerations: Weather can cause delays. Shorter days limit working hours. Biocide treatments work more slowly in cold temperatures.

The Bottom Line

Honestly? The best time to clean your roof is whenever you notice it needs doing. Waiting for the "perfect" season often means the problem gets worse.

If you're planning ahead, spring and early autumn are ideal. But if your roof needs attention now, don't wait — we work year-round and will advise if conditions aren't suitable.
